Golden Girls = Sex and the City
I had an epiphany last night...I suppose I had extra room in my brain for such things after finishing my novel! The characters in Golden Girls parallel the characters in Sex and the City (at least on a superficial level).
Bear with me:
Blanche = Samantha (no explanation required)
Rose = Charlotte (naive, optimistic, cute)
Dorothy = Carrie (um...'unique' fashion sense...esp. in Dorothy's case...have you ever seen more flowing robes???)
Sophia = Miranda (wise-crackin')
While waiting for HOUSE to start, I happened to see part of GG last night and Rose was getting an AIDS test (bad transfusion) with Blanche coming as well for moral support. That sorta thing would definitely happen on SATC. In fact, I was reminded of the SATC where Carrie and Miranda see the Dr. to find out the gender of Miranda's baby.
The magnitude of finishing Nanowrimo is hitting...I can't wait to print that 190 page monster!!
Have a great day!!
Erika.

50,076!!
It's done!
One month of my life and I produced a 190 page, 50,076 word rough draft. Maybe it hasn't quite hit yet because I'm not bouncing off the walls.
But I am proud! And tired.
That's it for me for now...talk to you soon!

Gimmie the Good News!
Time for the Good News! It’s been spread far and wide to family and friends so now I can post with confidence that no one will find out by accident that Joe and I are engaged! We were out celebrating my birthday with some friends when I was presented with a birthday cake that said, “Happy birthday, Erika. Will you marry me?” Shock! Disbelief!! Mouth moving as I read every word!!! (“Happy birthday” – ok. But wait, what are these other four words…) What a terrific guy – I’m so lucky!
In other news: I was enjoying a bowl of miso soup and a spicy salmon roll at a small restaurant across the street from work today. I was solo so I eavesdropped on the conversations going on around me and noticed that everyone was complaining about someone or something. There’s a lot of negativity flowing around the business district. I don’t want to assume it’s an epidemic but I’ve got symptoms too! My hot temper and irritability at work are the most worrisome.
Nanowrimo is going fabu! I’m on schedule to finish one day early (although I’ll likely miss my installment tonight ‘cause I’m hitting the movies with Skittle! This time, I will not be late!!) I’m half thrilled that I will reach my goal and half nonchalant.
It’s fantastic that I set a goal and that I will meet it. I’ve made an infinite amount of progress and I will finally finish a novel. Those are all great things, and things that I have never done before.
But! On December 1, I will have what amounts to a 50,000 word lump of clay in my laptop. It will have to be shaped (rewrite one) and sculpted (rewrite two) and glazed (rewrite…3?!) before I can let anyone read it. I have also realized that I need to do a lot more character work and research on religious cults.
But! Positive spin, always positive: again those (rewrites) are things I’ve never done before. I’ll learn more about the writing process and hopefully after all that hard work, I’ll have a novel that tells a story that I’m really happy with!
On that note: I’m off!
Have a great day,
Erika.

Waiting for the call
Hiya,
I'm sitting at home on a beautiful, sunny November 11th. I've just had a personal moment of silence in Remembrance and now have Danny Michel's Tales from the Invisible Man on. (He's at the Black Sheep this weekend!!) Why am I not at the War Memorial (aka "Warme") like I was this time last year?
Before I answer that, let's remember last Remembrance Day briefly. If I remember correctly, it was the very first time I actually attended the service at Warme. Puff of Logic and I braved the bitter cold and it was so worth it. The ceremony was incredibly moving and I was glad to be there. Afterwards was either gin and pie (classy!) or tea chez P-of-L's. I think it was tea because it was so damn cold out! After that, I stopped off at the grocery store on the way home and bumped into my dear, dear high school friend SJG (creative nicknames elude me right now). We'd fallen out of touch since high school and I was so happy and surprised to see him! Now we hang out on a regular basis and I couldn't be happier about that!
To me, Remembrance Day also means remembering people in your life that you have lost. I always like to take a minute and think of my Grandparents who have passed on, as well as the two friends I lost way too early. And also, my Ginger. They are all always in my heart.

Moment of silence.

So back to today. Why am I in? Because my brother, Wag, is going to call sometime soon for me to pick him up at the bus station! Yes, he's back from England and I can hardly wait to see him. :)
In Nanowrimo news, I'm less that 1,000 words away from 20,000 words. I'm edging towards 100 pages making my book the longest ever in my history! I'm so proud to have gotten as far as I have and I've got the steam to continue and finish. This is turning out to be such a great experiment! And, while it's by no means easy, it's definitely not as hard as I thought it would to set aside the two hours/day to do it.
Last night marked the beginning of Birthday Celebrations! I'll be 27 on Monday...whoa. I hit the Fox and Feather with a bunch of my fabu work friends. Tomorrow, Joe and I are going out to dinner, then going out with friends for more birthday madness. Sunday is the pinnacle: lunch at Oma's with my family...Artie too! :D Monday is lunch with mom, Tuesday is lunch with my unit at work and Wednesday is lunch with K-80. A full week of celebrating. I love it!!
Speaking of K-80, I told her about the crazy hair dresser I wrote about in my last post. Apparently her old roommate's wife met him at a dog park and now he cuts her hair. The word is he's on the level but I ♥ the Hair Loft, so it's unlikely that I'll take the plunge and go see him. K-80 knows everyone!
K, that's it for me for now. Have a wonderful day!
Ciao,

Day 2: semiSLACKER!
Did you know this would happen? I tried to believe it wouldn't but truly, I knew it would: here I am, it's 9 34pm and I haven't written ONE nanowrimo word since lunch.
Yes: it was a brutal, yet rewarding day at work. (No details -- don't wanna get Dooced, right?!)
Yes: I am afflicted with a strange 'every second day' flu that attacked Monday and now today. I can barely drag my carcass across the floor to my laptop, aka nanowrimo central. (Oh: fun fact re: my laptop. Joe programmed it to play 'the final countdown' when warming up and 'goodbye goodbye' while shutting down!)
and Yes: America's Next Top Model was on from 8 -> 9. (But House was on last night and I managed my goal! And Puff Of Logic and Kaz came to watch since their cable isn't hooked up yet. And it was *reeaally* good!))
But those are just excuses. Why am I not typing away like a mad fiend to reach my daily goal? Am I getting cocky with my current daily tally of 953 words? I'm gonna swoop in and spit out 717 words between now and bedtime? Could be...
Yeah...Time to get started -> It's only day two...way too soon to be slackin'!
'Night!

Day One
Well, the first day of Nanowrimo has come and gone and I beat my daily goal of a 1667 word count by three words. I am a literary rock star. It’s really tough turning off the Inner Editor though…man alive. That’s one of the rules, by the way: delete nothing. Also: anything goes. So two of my characters were involved in a very long, somewhat repetitive discussion over the period of six pages. I have only the dimmest idea of what goes next. But it’s all in good fun and hey, after writing 250 pages of long, somewhat repetitive prose, I should have at least (hopefully) 100 good pages. That's right: forever the optimist.
Surrey! I just realized that I haven’t written about Surrey. Man, what a trip. It seems so long ago, but it was only a week and a half. It was everything I hoped it would be…and I had high hopes. Friday and Saturday were packed solid with workshops from 10 am to 5pm and Sunday went from 9 30 to noon. There were 2 workshops in the morning and 2 in the afternoon.
These workshops were sandwiched between buffet breakfasts with the two members of my Ottawa writing group who came as well, buffet lunches and banquet dinners. Each lunch and dinner had a keynote speaker, most of which proved to be very inspiring. Then at night there were Night Owl sessions from 9pm to 10ish.
I learned so much and by the end of Saturday I had the shakes from being around so much…information…so many interesting people. It was an overwhelming combination and by the end (Sunday around 2 30 pm) I was dazed and ready to renounce writing. By Monday I was fine though, and ready to write again.
If I can save $3/day for the next year, I can go again next year (without having to break my piggy bank, as well as the piggy banks of my nearest and dearest). Now I bring my lunch to work.
Right: work. Buzzkill. It’s 10 15 pm and I need to be up … well, not soon, but must keep my strength up for nanowrimo. So bon nuit for now! I promise that by November’s end, after I have written my 50,000 words, I’ll write about more interesting things. Like Portobello mushrooms and knitting. Ooh la la.
Ciao,
Erika.
Ps. If I could count my blog as nanowrimo fodder, I’d be up by another 446 words. Whoa.
Pss. I checked out Sarah Slean's website and found an interesting addition: Vitamins. The quotes that are found approx halfway down the page got me revved for my own creative aspirations. Thanks Sarah! :)
