Gourmet Night

The major essay for my Jacobean Shakespeare was originally due on Thursday 26 July (finding out about the five day extension at 12:30 am on July 26 is a whole other story). After work on Wednesday, I made a pit stop to pick up the essentials for gourmet night: red bull and doritos. My body was crying out for student staples so I caved, thinking my body knew best. The difficulty I had in falling asleep that night is testimony to how wrong my body was. In the days that followed I noticed I was craving processed foods more than usual which made me wonder about those additives and preservatives I was consuming. It may not have been the healthiest meal but I do like the pictures I got from it (aka: procrastination tool # 10823-B).

The month of July was an absolute whirlwind! Taking a class while working full time and planning the wedding was not the best decision I ever made but it made me so grateful for the month or so of summer that lies ahead of me. This weekend, after Joe and I celebrate our 6th anniversary, we're going to the Wolfe Island Music festival with Shawn and Heather. I'm also looking forward to having all Mondays in August off. It will be fantastic to have some extra time with Joe before...we start our new jobs! Joe is going down the entrepreneurial road and I've made a lateral move within the same organization.

Part of the July whirlwind was my bachelorette party! DC was in town so the girls decided to surprise me with a night on the town on Friday the thirteenth. We started out with an early dinner a quartre in the Glebe. The girls had been in contact via email so there was immediate rapport...add to that our friendly and enthusiatic waitress and we were feeling great by the time we wandered down to the bead store to make jewellry for the wedding day. I was overly ambitious and my necklace was too elaborate to finish in one night [I'm told this is in keeping with my personality...I believe the exact quote was "you don't make things easy for yourself" :)] so I'm going back in the next couple of weeks. In the cab to Milestones, LP produced a tiara and a veil from her bag and KG secured them on my head. We walked into the bar and met up with SW, AI and EC. It was an amazing night and by the end of it, I was brimming over with happiness and love for all these amazing gals in my life! Mmmwah...thanks y'all!!

In other news, I finally read "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides last week. It. Was. Amazing! It is an epic story of the Stephanides family that features vivid depictions of the immigrant experience and the realism of war. It made me think about what my Oma and Opa experienced when they moved from Austria to Canada with my mom in 1956. On top of the engaging story, there are heaps of literary references for an English nerd like me.

Chuck Palahniuk (author of Fight Club) was on "The Hour" last week and he had some interesting things to say about writing. Rather than writing alone, Mr. Palahniuk seeks out public spaces in which to write: cafes, airports, emergency rooms. He also participates in a weekly writing group where members read their submissions out loud and are critiqued. You can see his interview here:

That's it for me! Have a fab night and enjoy the rest of your summer!

Erika.
