Not Bad For One Day's Work

Joe and I are getting excited about Europe! We're going to Scotland, Italy, Austria and Lichtenstein. Now that my essay's handed in and I wrote my exam, I am really starting to look forward to our trip.

While we are in Europe it will be my cousin Barbara's birthday so I'm making her a pair of Spirogyra fingerless gloves. I bought a hank of Handmaiden yarn on Thursday and got started yesterday. The pattern is easy to memorize and the yarn is so good to work with that I'm already nearly done the left glove (modeled below by my right hand...oops!).

Yesterday was a beautiful warm sunny day. I got a tan walking to the National Library and Archives of Canada for the Writer's Festival. Dan Gardner from the Ottawa Citizen read from his book "Understanding Risk: The Science and Politics of Fear" at noon, then at 2:00, we caught "Looking for Anne: How Lucy Maud Montgomery Dreamed Up a Literary Classic" by Irene Gammel (Canada Research Chair in Modern Literature and Culture at Ryerson). One interesting bit of trivia that I picked up is that L.M. Montgomery saw a picture of a model called Evelyn Nesbitt and she inspired what Anne looked like. I googled her when I got home and of all the pictures I saw, this one seems the most "Anne" to me.

Evelyn Nesbitt

It was interesting to learn where authors get inspiration for how their characters look. I have a scrapbook at home with one page devoted to each of three characters. I used to scour through my magazine collection and snip any picture that captured the essence of one of my characters. It was a great way to get a sense of how they look and the clothes they wear but it does more than that. By putting a face to the name (names always come first to me), the essence of each character is drawn from my unconscious and I understand more about the character's energy and personality. Maybe I need to start buying magazines again...

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Erika.

ps: On Tuesday, our little puppy-to-be (Cooper) will be born!
