Winter Knits
This Entrelac Scarf was a birthday gift for my mom-in-law.

I used the YarnPath tutorial and Estelle Watercolours in teal (0610-218) and white (0610-121).

Once I started Entrelac, I just couldn't stop! I'm finishing Joe's way belated Christmas prezzie which is a nice tweedy scarf.
***
This is a hat that I made for my dad. It's based on a brown hat that my Aunt knit...it's famously known around the house as the 'brown bean hat' because of its distinctive reddish brown shade.
When I asked dad what colour he wanted, he said French blue...the kind you see in Provence. I chose Mission Falls 1824 wool 536 (Aster).
I checked the Barbara Walker "A Treasury of Knitting Patterns" and after agonizing for a week, I chose "Aran Diamonds with Moss Stitch" flanked by the uneven cable. I'm not sure that the uneven cables turned out the way they should have. It took three tries before I got the hat just right. I have enough yarn left...I think I'll make myself one too!
Too big?

So fab!

I auctioned these mittens off at work to raise money for the United Way campaign. Again, it took three tries to get them right but once I got it, they knit up really fast. It was my first time embroidering and it's a lot harder than I thought it would be! I used the basic mitten pattern from "Knit Mittens" by Robin Hansen and I based the snowflake design on this free pattern by Mags Kandis.

By the time I was done them, I kinda wanted to keep them!

***
My next project is something for me: Whit's Knits Flip Top Mittens from Purl Bee in pink and gold. Pics of these and Joe's Christmas giftie are coming soon!
Have a great week!
Erika.

A Grim Tale
Poor old Christmas Bear. He didn't last too long.

Santa Worm and Hernez look away. The survivor's guilt quite overwhelms them.

Briefly sated, the sociopathic pup has a look around and spots his next target. Beware those big brown eyes and sweet puppy face. The Cairn Terror is a most dangerous predator.

Happy 2009!
For a few years, I’ve been iffy on the whole New Years Resolution thingy. I’m all for personal improvement but being a capricious creature, by mid-February, I’m off on a whole new tangent with new resolutions to match.
A few months ago, I discovered Christine Kane’s blog. Check it out here. It’s become one of my Must Reads and while digging through her archives, I came across a post entitled, “Resolution Revolution: A Better Way to Start Your Year”. In this post, Christine outlines why resolutions don’t work and suggests a novel approach that will: choose one word to guide you through your year.
For the past few months, I’ve been casually wondering what my word should be. December was really busy with work, school and Christmas; consequently the month zoomed by so fast that I’m not quite convinced it happened!. Now, we’re midway into the first full week of January and I’m still wordless (but not speechless…ha!).
A Day in the Life:
On the last day of 2008, I had the kind of day that I want to mad science multiply and populate the calendar of 2009. Just before driving to Kingston for the Rocking-est New Years Eve ever, I submitted a query letter to a magazine. I also registered for two more online writing courses (the first course generating the article I pitched to the magazine, a short story, a story for children and a poem).
I had a list of words that I thought covered this day: Action, Courage, Direction, Focus, Initiative and Proactive. But they all felt way too sterile and corporate. Idly, I searched Initiative in the thesauraus and found my word.
MOXIE
So there it is.
What’s your word for 2009?
Cheers!
