Jordy Version 3.0
Joe and I call our mouse Jordy. It makes of us think of him less as a creepy crawly and more of a family pet. We've had some fun, the three of us. From the first time we met him when he was trapped in a vase to the time he held me hostage in the living room over Spring Break. We know his likes (warm places, the drawer under the oven, freaking me out) and his dislikes (incense!!! snow!!! the neighbour's black cat!!!). And he's back. Or at least, he stopped in for a visit.
Yesterday was the first snowstorm of the year. A blustery day. On the walk home, the snow was laced with freezing rain. I had the house to myself in the evening and I watched "Ugly Betty" while working on the dishcloths that I'm making for my friend Roz's dog rescue (photos to come!). There was a rustling sound coming from the kitchen behind me so I got up to check if there was a mouse. Nope, just a bag rustling against the wall by the heating vent.
When Joe came home, the first thing he said was, "Bad news, Jordy's hiding behind the microwave". I panicked more than I care to admit and while Joe played cat and mouse (*snicker*) with Jordy, I stood in the living room with my size 4's out, trying to figure out how to make a butterfly net with knitting needles. The standoff came to an end when Jordy make a break for it and dove into the toaster!
That's when my position in the living room came in handy. I grabbed "The Seventeen Book of Etiquette and Entertaining" (circa 1963...thanks Mom!) and passed it to Joe who covered the toast slots with it. Joe carefully slid the makeshift trap off the counter and onto a binder while pressing the book on top. We got our coats on and went out into the wintery wilds.
We walked down our dead-end street being careful not to get too close to the embassy with our mysterious package. When we were close enough to the main road, Joe released the toaster. It bounced on the snow and Jordy popped out. He didn't like the snow and ran toward us. We kicked snow at him and he ran out to the main road and disappeared over the slushy ridge.
After the madness ended and I felt sure that Jordy was safe on the other side of the street, we turned around to see a man desperately trying to start his pickup truck. He avoided eye contact as we walked past him and went home. I would have avoided eye contact too.
Before going inside, we tossed the toaster into the garbage hut.

The Big Reveal
Over the next few weeks (or week, if I'm feeling ambitious!), I'd like to show and tell you all about our wedding.
Today's episode: Gifties & The Rehearsal!
Now that my Bridesmaids (who will hereafter be known as my Dream Team) have received their gifties, I can reveal what I was working on from 23 May – 30 September. I used Estelle Watercolours, 2 balls/scarf (one in each colour) and finished each scarf with long tassels. My top secret knitting project was both a labour of love and a sanity saver as I returned to work full time in May and followed the intense class in Jacobean Shakespeare in the summer months. Last spring, I polled Lindsay, Katie and Diane on their favourite colours and the colours of their fall and winter coats. Entrelac scarves were big on Craftster and I was dying to try the challenging technique. While I worked on each scarf, I concentrated on the recipient of that scarf; memories, personalities, countless reasons that I love them and that I’m glad they’re in my life. By the time I finished the three scarves, I identified each scarf so strongly with each girl that I wasn’t surprised to see how perfect the scarves looked on them...the scarves even matched the outfits that they were wearing that night!
All together now:

Charcoal & Jade for Katie, Navy & Merlot for Lindsay, and Ivory & Merlot for Diane.
To make the wedding day even more fun for the girls, I made up survival kits. Each kit contained a healthy and delicious B. Goods cookie, chocolate covered pretzels, lip stuff (aka Blistex), and smaller “just in case” items. If I had the opportunity to do it again, I’d add those pint-sized bottles of water but I just couldn’t track them down before the wedding.
Dream Team Survival Kit:

The Rehearsal took place on the afternoon before the wedding. It was a dark day, rain plummeting down by the bucketful and the lights in the church were low. Joe, Lindsay and I brought the hand-made seating chart, homemade giveaways (heart-shaped linzer radelns made by my mom!) and pumpkin tea light holders (carved by Joe and Sean on Thursday night) to give to Liz, the coordinator, to decorate the reception hall.
After lunch at Harry McLean’s, the wedding party went their separate ways: Joe and the lads went to his mom’s and the girls and I returned to Ottawa . It was the perfect quiet evening, chatting with the girls over wine and getting to bed just before midnight for a good night’s sleep. Strangely, I woke up several times throughout the night because I was starving. Some people get cold feet – I get hungry.
That's it for tonight's installment. Stay tuned for more wedding trivia and pictures...
