Be Joyful/My Children Be Joyful...
*** Huzzah for Auto-Recover! The computer just crashed and almost paddled this entire post across the river to Hades…As soon as it happened, Rock Plaza Central lyrics popped into my head:” Be joyful/My children be joyful”…A bizarre moment and also very fitting with my surreal state of mind since watching the first season of Twin Peaks.***
It’s quiet in the office today. So quiet that I’m spending too much time inside my head and need to blog my way out. Nearly everyone is away at the staff BBQ extravaganza but I prefer to stay put and do my best “Stanley From the American “Office”” impression. He’s the guy who just wants to do his damn job, maybe grab a pretzel, do his crossword and go home. Hey, you know what? If you substitute “knitting” for “crossword”…shazaam…I’m Stanley or, if you’ll indulge me: Stanleigh.
The transition back into work continues. The days do seem to be improving slowly due to lunch and breaks with KG, my constant email lifeline to LP and the level-headed, calming influence of Joe. I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t actually mind being in the office, it’s just the job description that’s giving me a tough time. But I won’t get into that here. :)
The strangest day of the week is Friday. At the end of the work week, my ‘self’ is all used up and I need a quick nap to restore it. When I wake up, I see the two fresh days that lie ahead of me with the perspective of a kid on summer vacation. When I return to work on Mondays, I experience culture shock…like Weekend-Me is clashing with Workweek-Me. It was especially tough this Monday because of the surreal tour-de-force that is season one of “Twin Peaks”.
In knitting news: I have finally picked up my half-finished sock and I plan on finishing it this week! I have one Top Secret Project nearly done and I am ten inches ahead of schedule on the second. Interestingly, my work on the Top Secret Project has made me a better sock knitter.

No Clever Title
In 1997, I accepted my high school diploma. Today, ten years later, I accepted my second BA (magna cum laude!). Way back in March, when I filled out my application to graduate, I considered not attending the ceremony. Fortunately I changed my mind. There's something about a ceremony that really cements the magnitude of an achievement. Thanks to Joe and my family for the lovely flowers, smiles and misty eyes. Or maybe my eyes were the misty ones...
I'll start my mission to get my Honours in two weeks with an intensive course on Shakespeare. I've never studied Shakespeare outside of high school but I know the professor and his style so I'm confident that I'll be able to maintain my good marks.
Wedding planning is turning into something of a part-time job! It's a fun job and Joe and I are both working equally hard on designing the look and feeling that we want for the day and securing the people who will help us realize our vision. We met with a wonderful photographer today and yesterday we finalized the design of the cake! Barb, from Icing on the Cake, is one of 23 North American artists that are authorized to reproduce Elvis's image. We decided not to go with the King but the three of us came up with a cake that is simple, unique and elegant.

In other wedding news, the bridesmaid dresses are on the way and the first wedding dress try-on and fitting is scheduled for this coming weekend.
On the knitting front, I'm working on some top secret bridesmaid projects so no photos until after October 20th...sorry girls! ☺ Prior to starting my labour of love, I made a great pair of socks for Ainslie's birthday but the computer ate the photos. I'm planning on making myself a mini version of the same socks with the leftover yarn so I'll post those so just imagine them bigger. The pattern I used was Thuja from Knitty (added to my links...click on Thuja). It was a great pattern to follow...very clear and a rewarding quick knit. The pair was knitted and blocked within one week. The rugged stitch pattern and the crocodilicious green yarn earned them the nickname "Croc Socks".
"Erika's First Sweater" Update: I finally finished Wicked! I'm happy with the quality of my knitting and I'll wear it with pride at home but it's too boxy to leave the house. I'm considering trying it again with a more appropriate, less bulky yarn.
Over the long weekend, Joe and I caught Douglas Coupland's first movie (!) "Everything's Gone Green" and it blew us away. For me, the big DC fan, it was like a fruit salad of his wonderful books. I won't spoil the recurring elements that I noticed but anyone who have read three or more of DC's books will recognize them. The movie was like watching a favourite book come to life. Another bonus is that Vancouver figures prominently as Vancouver. And you don't need to be an avid fan to get something out of the film...Joe laughed out loud along with me the entire time. It was great to catch up! We should do this again sometime. Enjoy the rest of your evening.
